The Poet XThe Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a coming of age story told through poetry. This is what initially drew me towards this book.

I listened to the audiobook and it was a lot more dramatic to hear the words vs reading them. It is like X is right there, telling you her story. The pacing and emphasis make a huge difference to how the words impact you.

Overall, the story is a bit predictable but discusses very relatable topics for girls everywhere. From her first boyfriend with overprotective parents to struggling with religion. All the themes are pretty universal and I really enjoyed it.

X deals with her struggles and eventually, it all works out. Our generation and the newer ones grew up in an environment that is very different from our parents’, so naturally, we will butt heads with our mothers at one time or another.

This book is an inspiration to any aspiring poet and a very interesting read.
