The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I absolutely, positively adore this book! It is one of the quaintest stories I have read in a very long time. I fell in love with the movie Secret of Moonacre years ago and I have wanted to read the book ever since, but I struggled to get my hands on it.
I eventually managed to locate an ebook version and I was finally able to read this elusive story. Naturally, it differs from the movie quite a bit but I think I love the book even more. It was written in the 1940s so some of the events are a bit old-fashioned and controversial in this day and age, so I understand why they changed some of the events for the screen adaptation.
Little Maria Merryweather is very wise for her years and stands up for what she believes in. Ultimately, this is what saves her home. Her stubborn perseverance and belief in all that is good. She trusts her intuition and it doesn’t lead her astray.
Robin was my favourite character in the movie and I love him even more in the book. For those of you who were as mad as I was about the cliffhanger in the movie, you should definitely read the book to find out if they get their happily ever after.
Ms Heliotrope also has a backstory that the movie neglected to mention, and her long lost love was left out altogether. All of the characters manage to find what they’re looking for in this cute fairytale.
I have to add though that I had to look up a handful of words in the dictionary every so often. I haven’t read many classic books lately so my vocabulary could do with a little dusting. This book has also inspired me to read more books that were written in the past and to draw inspiration from the years that have come and gone. I had forgotten how much I love books like this.
Overall, it was a quality read and I will be on the hunt for a physical copy to put in my library one day.
