The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter - And How to Make the Most of Them NowThe Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter – And How to Make the Most of Them Now by Meg Jay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I decided to read this after quite a few people in my life mentioned it to me. It is a self-development book (I’m not a fan of the term self-help for some reason), aimed at people in their twenties.

The author gives a lot of firsthand accounts of some of her clients who were in their twenties when they started seeing her for therapy. She noticed a few common threads occurring. We don’t take our twenties as seriously as we should and underestimate the role they play in our life.

Too many people see it as a time to mess around and have fun, leaving their thirties before getting serious about relationships and jobs. What we don’t realise is that our twenties is the time when we develop a lot of our patterns and habits that will influence us for the rest of our lives.

Our brains are still developing and it is the best time for us to start implementing positive changes and learning to make better decisions. If we wait until our thirties, we will be out of time to take things slowly and everything will happen all at once.

She emphasises the importance of networking and being mindful of all our choices along the way. Even when dating, we shouldn’t settle, otherwise, we might end up settling into marriage and divorce. Everything from your career to your relationship forms in your twenties and it is the ideal time to start deciding which direction you want to go to.

Overall, I’m glad I decided to read this book as it gave me a lot to think about. Incidentally, it reminded me of a few things that my mother has said to me over the years, just phrased in a different manner.

It has also sparked a bit of flame under me and I am a lot more motivated to chase what I want from life. Your future is in your hands and you have the tools to achieve your dreams if you put your mind to it.
